SSL Certificate Authority Global Sign Appoints Microsoft Vet as CTO

Certificate authority and Internet security firm GlobalSign announced this week that it had appointed Ryan Hurst, a 10 year veteran of Microsoft’s security business, as its new chief technology officer, charging him with developing the company’s overall technology vision, product architecture, standards and compliance.

He will also be responsible for overseeing GlobalSign’s engineering and operations organizations. It is the second significant appointment for GlobalSign in as many weeks. Last week, the company named former Networking4All CTO Paul van Brouwershaven its business development director for the EMEA region.

In his 10 years at Microsoft, says GlobalSign, Hurst was responsible for security engineering within the company’s advertising business. He was previously responsible for integrating security and networking technologies including cryptography, digital certificates, smart cards, biometrics, code signing, document signing and network authentication into a variety of successful Microsoft products.

He was also significantly involved in the management of the Microsoft Root Certificate program, the repository of CAs authorized by Microsoft to provide digital certificates.
“We are extremely excited to see Ryan join the GlobalSign team. He has earned an incredible reputation in the industry as a recognized security expert, and his experience will immediately help GlobalSign fulfill our goal of providing trusted digital certificate solutions to enterprises and partners of all sizes,” says Steve Waite, chief executive officer of GlobalSign, quoted in the press release. “Ryan’s vision will be invaluable as the public trust model continues to evolve to stay ahead of the growing threats to the modern Internet society.”

Also quoted in the announcement, Hurst says he is excited to help direct the technical aspects of GlobalSign’s business, in particular its new mobile and cloud security solutions.

Web Host Myhosting.com Offers goMobi Mobile Website Builder

Web hosting provider Myhosting.com announced on Monday that it has launched support for mobile website builder platform, goMobi through its partnership with Parallels. Myhosting.com website hosting customers can now build mobile websites for their businesses. Parallels began offering goMobi via its Parallels Plesk panel in August 2011.

The goMobi Mobile Website Builder platform includes a number of features allowing customers to add options like products, contact forms, reviews, image galleries as well as link to their full website.

The goMobi setup assistant automatically generates a mobile website based on an existing website to help users get started quickly.“With search engines like Google indicating that mobile is an upcoming trend webmasters should be aware of, the time to jump on the bandwagon is now,” Tim Attwood, product manager at myhosting.com said in a statement. “Mobile users interact with search results and websites differently than desktop users, and with the mobile segment growing every day, every SMB or website owner should be thinking about grabbing their slice of that pie.”

Other features of goMobi mobile websites include a one-click to call button, booking request for customers to request a reservation and a “tell a friend” feature which allows visitors to share information about a website through Facebook, Twitter and social media sites.

MyHosting.com is offering customers a 30-day free trial. Once the trial is up, MyHosting.com’s goMobi mobile website builder costs $4.95 per month.
In December 2011, cPanel began offering the goMobi mobile website builder tool via its hosting control panel.

Phoenix Nap Completes Acquisition of Web Host Secured Servers

Arizona-based data center operator PhoenixNAP announced this week that it had completed its deal to acquire dedicated hosting provider Secured Servers, an arrangement that was first announced back in August of 2011.

According to the company, the deal puts PhoenixNAP – traditionally a provider at the data center space and colocation end of the hosting spectrum, which had added some infrastructure-as-a-service cloud functions – in a position to meet a broader range of IT infrastructure needs.

The acquisition was a little out of the ordinary because of the familiarity between the two companies. Secured Servers was a stand-alone dedicated server start-up launched almost a decade ago by CWIE Holdings, which owns several hosting-related properties, while PhoenixNAP was a separate data center project that shared some of the same management people.

Secured Servers was able to take advantage of the PhoenixNAP data center resources as a customer, and, following the launch of PhoenixNAP’s IaaS offering, naturally filled in some of the gaps around the data center company’s offerings for small businesses, up to medium-sized enterprises.

The acquisition brings together the product set, resources and management into a more compelling set of services for those customers. “This addition to Phoenix NAP falls right in line with our full service data center philosophy. We understand there are differing needs within the IT infrastructure space, and this acquisition puts us in a position to help address the variety of market demands,” said Ian McClarty, president of Phoenix NAP, quoted in the press release. “Our colocation options, public cloud services, and now dedicated hosting solutions reflect the ongoing commitment we have to be a go-to provider for established and emerging technologies.”

Part of the process of combining the two organizations was a re-engineering of some of the infrastructure around the solutions, says PhonenixNAP. “Throughout the acquisition process, our team of networking engineers and technicians has been re-designing and building a completely new network to support current and future demands,” says Jordan Jacobs, director of corporate strategy for Phoenix NAP, quoted in the press release. “Every single layer of the network is being upgraded, and we are confident it will route traffic efficiently while accommodating continued growth.”

The companies say they plan to launch some new hardware offerings in the coming weeks.

Customers can purchase any of SeekDotNet’s four reseller plans using the coupon code: PR25RESELL, and receive the 25 percent discount.
